October 25, 2023

The Lady Cats closed out the regular season with a win on the road and a loss at home. On Monday the Lady Cats took down the Rocky Boy Stars on the road. On Saturday in front of the hometown crowd they fell to the Poplar Indians.

The Lady Cats began the week on a high note, taking down the Rocky Boy Stars on the road in straight sets. The Lady Cats cruised to a first set win 35-14 to seize the momentum early. The Stars played much better in set number two, but the Lady Cats still prevailed 25-21. Harlem won the match with a lopsided 25-7 win in set number three.

On Saturday the Lady Cats honored their seniors prior to the start of their match with Poplar. Harlem took a quick 6-1 lead early in the first set on the strength of a pair of kills from senior Emma Billmayer. The Lady Cats held on to take set number one 25-23.

Poplar evened the match in set number two with a 25-21 set win. The Indians took control of the match with a win in set number three 25-19. The Lady Cats fought hard in set number four but in the end, Poplar took the set 25-22 to win the match 3-1.

Head Coach, Kim Faulkinberry talked about her team heading into the District 2B tournament, “Not quite the way we want to finish the season with 3-1 loss versus Poplar. We didn’t play bad at all, we just didn’t serve well, probably our worst serving percentage of the season. All four sets were close enough that our serves would have made a difference. Always lots of emotions on senior night.”

Faulkinberry added, “I do believe that we can beat any team in our district if the girls play with confidence and heart. We have proven that we can compete well with any team, we just have to get over the hump and learn to play to win all the time.”

The Lady Cats will be the No. 6 seed heading into the District 2B Tournament in Glasgow this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Harlem will begin play Thursday night against the Glasgow Scotties. The winner of that match will move on to face No. 2 Fairview at 11:30 am Friday morning. The loser will play the loser of match number three (No. 1 Wolf Point vs. Malta/Poplar) Friday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
