Beeters cage longhorns 77-62, fall to Shelby 72-44

The Chinook Sugarbeeters had a non-conference tilt Friday night versus the Fort Benton Longhorns. A game that went the way of the Sugarbeeter, 77-62. Saturday night, they traveled to Shelby to take on the Coyotes in a District 2B conference match. When the final bell rang, it was Shelby 72, Chinook 44.

The Longhorns scored early and often in the first quarter, putting 20 points on the scoreboard. Meanwhile, the Sugarbeeters got nine points from junior Carson Nissen and four points from senior Jackson Nordboe to stay close through the first quarter of action, trailing 20-15 heading into the second quarter. The defense showed up big in the second quarter, holding the fast-paced Longhorns to just 12 points. The 'Beeter offense really picked up the pace with Jackson Nordboe scoring 11 before the half. Senior Gyme Kelly added six, while collectively, the 'Beeters scored 27 in the second quarter to hold a 42-32 lead at halftime.

Gyme Kelly kicked off the third quarter by knocking down a triple while four players accounted for seven points as the 'Beeter offense managed just 10 points. The Longhorns, however, scored 17 in the frame, sending the teams to the fourth quarter with Chinook still holding a narrow 52-49 lead.

Jackson Nordboe and Nissen each scored six down the stretch while junior Landon Beck scored five, providing the 'Beeters with the strong finish they needed to secure a 77-62 win over the Fort Benton Longhorns. Nordboe finished with a game high 27 points to lead the way, while Nissen and Gyme Kelly each scored 15 in the victory.

Saturday night in Shelby, it was the Coyotes that jumped out to a 17-12 lead at the end of one. The 'Beeters were led in the quarter by Nissen with six points. Both teams each managed 15 more before the break, sending the teams into halftime with Shelby on top, 32-27. Nissen again lead the 'Beeters in scoring with five points from the field.

The Coyotes took over in the third quarter, outscoring Chinook 21-7 to extend the Coyotes lead to 53-34. Gyme Kelly knocked down a triple and scored five of the team's seven third quarter points. Entering the fourth quarter, the 'Beeters were looking to get something done and cut into the Coyote lead, but were unable to do so. In the end, it was Shelby earning a 72-44 win over the Chinook Sugarbeeters.

Leading the way for the 'Beeters was Nissen with 17 points, while Gyme Kelly finished with nine.

The 'Beeters will host the Choteau Bulldogs this Thursday and then travel to Rocky Boy to take on the Morning Stars on Saturday.
