Summer is a time for vacations, but it is also one of the most challenging times of the year for maintaining the nation’s blood supply. According to the American Red Cross, blood donations often decline during the summer months as regular donors travel and school-based blood drives pause. At the same time, the need for blood remains constant due to accidents, trauma cases and other medical emergencies. To help meet that need, the American Red Cross will host a community blood drive on Tuesday, July 21, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Community C...

Through camps, workshops, and project activities, 4-H members spend the summer learning by doing—one of the hallmarks of the 4-H youth development program. One of the highlights of the summer is Multi-County 4-H Camp, where youth from 7 counties across north c...

I’ve become an early morning person. I don’t know if I’ve always been one. Most years of my life I simply rolled out of bed to do what needed doing without question. Now I’m a woman of leisure. I’ve not had a clock in my bedroom for years. I wake to the light. To the light and to the ever-loud, greet-the-sunrise, bird-cricket-frog-donkey-chicken cho-rus. The birds sing full-throat through the half-hour of pre-dawn light followed by a silence as the sun rises. Then they go about their birdy business-as-usual, noisily. One morning last week I aw...
You know, Lord, when working in the garden, picking peas, beans or even pulling Rhubarb stalks, a granny’s apron sure comes in handy as a carry-all. My own grandma’s apron is tucked away and not used by any in this generation. Youngsters who come over to ‘help’ cook are usually surprised when given an apron to wear as wearing an apron is an unknown in most of their homes. One can just imagine Grandma in her checkered apron. Daddy’s Grandma was clever; she embroidered her initials in her apron strings. Her Sunday apron is among our family’s...
GOOSE ‘EM! The journalist Molly Ivins once observed that politicians are goosey. This is an election year when politicians are particularly goosey. So… Goose ‘em! Goose ‘em with your presence at gatherings of people who agree on an issue. Goose ‘em with petitions for a better, freer country. Goose ‘em with your vote. The U.S. Constitution protects your rights, and mine, to assemble, petition, and vote. Politics affect you, your life, your future. Politicians need your support. You have power. Use it. Pick your cause: overturn the Citizens Un...
Out of our way, I spent several hours in ER after Doc tossed me and I really banged up my back and ribs. I was told by some real deal cowhands that such injuries go along with the trade. Today, years later, after a fall over a lawnchair, those same injuries have reawakened. I am in pain that the asperin cannot touch - and I need to sleep sitting up for the time being. But as the old timers told me -if you are going to cowboy, you are going to get hurt from time to time. I found the same is true in discipleship. Christ is Head of the Church, but...
