I noticed a Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks (FWP) pickup parked for several days in front of the Grande Villa where my wife and I live in Chinook. During the day the pickup was loaded with some sort of animal traps, some mornings a full load, other days most of the traps gone. Asking around I finally met up with Jules Nelson and Daniel Johnson, two FWP wildlife technicians gathering data for an ongoing census survey to determine the status of swift foxes in our area. I grew up in Chinook and am proud to be a Beeter. I’ve lived in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho for over 40 years but Chinook will always be home. The Chinook Pool and park needs our support to fund essential improvements. I no longer have property in the area but have close friends and family residing there. Generations of residents - young, old, rich and poor - have enjoyed the pool. It is crucial to preserve these recreational anchors for future generations. Hundreds of individuals have had swim lessons, learned lifesaving, or competed on the Swim Team...
You know, Lord, it’s only a few days into the New Year and how fun to snuggle under a nice thick blanket in my quiet-time chair, looking forward to these silent moments with You, Lord, in the wee hours of a, so far, untouched year. The fireplace dances a gentle glow into the room’s darkness. In the dim light, shelves filled with photos, books, mementos and other things, are reminders of an abundant life. Sitting now with You, Lord, it’s interesting to review the year that has just passed. We go over the highs and lows, triumphs and defea...

The Holidays are a joyous time, Christmas lights shine all over town, stores are filled with holiday decorations and people generally seem to smile more. Social gatherings centering around the spirit of the holidays are held, Christmas Concerts are held and letters to Santa are written. The overall feeling is joy and happiness and togetherness, at least that is the image being presented. The reality is that for many the holiday season is a desperate struggle. This time of year, often forces people from all ages to put on a happy face while...

Christmas is viewed through so many different eyes, and each has their own unique perspective on what it means to them. Family heritage, location, age, financial situation all play roles in how the holiday is viewed. I thought it would be fun to ask the citizens of Blaine County, from different towns, of different ages and different family dynamics two questions. The first: All I want for Christmas... finish the sentence. The second, what do the Holidays mean to you? I was expecting the answers...

While currently doing our annual dog/house sitting in Woodinville, Washington my wife and I decided we wanted a Christmas tree. We stopped at a tree lot near the local Safeway to buy a suitable tree. We got 'Christmas tree sticker shock' big time, a tree the right size for our Airbnb apartment cost $70. A serious tree was in the $300 range. A guy in cold weather gear approached and asked how he could help. We told him we were visiting from Montana and were looking for a reasonably priced tree....

The Holiday season is a joyous time, and after a couple years of pandemic related issues the season is again being celebrated across the county. The Community Dinner was record setting, schools are holding Christmas concerts and holiday themed events are happening in Chinook, Harlem, Fort Belknap, Hays, Lodge Pole and Turner. The Holiday spirit seems alive and well. The Holidays weren't always relevant in Blaine County, especially 100 years ago when Christmas and Thanksgiving seemed to be more...

Anyone driving to Hogeland or Turner on Montana Highway 241 East will spot some metal sculptures between mile markers 15 and 17. This art not only has potential to entertain motorists but also provides a testament to the talent of Hogeland resident Steve Leitner. The first pieces of artwork to appear on the fence line on the north side of the road depict two fish, one chasing another in a predator-prey pursuit. According to Leitner, that first fish looked like he was trying to escape from...

Brickcent$ has been busier than Bob the Builder. On November 10, business owner Brandon Nissen posted a video to YouTube and on Facebook announcing that interested individuals could adopt a LEGO dog in order to help PAWS of Chinook manage the expenses of operation as they took on the more than twenty dogs from the "Hell House" gang of hounds. At the time, neither he nor Executive Director of PAWS, Alissa Hewitt envisioned the response. So far, the idea has generated nearly $500.00 for PAWS. The...
