I don’t suppose I really knew that such a thing existed but if I did, I would not think of calling it a Piastra Radiante in Ghisa Smaltata. Knowing that it is a flat plate of cast iron, glazed on one side, about the size of a dessert plate, I wondered how it got its name. Does piastra have something to do with pastry? The consonants sort of match up with those in patisserie, which the French unabridged says does mean cake shop or confectioner’s shop. A further search reveals that piastra means griddle, hot plate, iron plate, or waffle iro...
We have come a long way in the celebrating of the Fourth of July in this neck of the woods. It used to be that homesteaders would fire a gun out the front door of their houses early in the morning of the 4th and that would be their celebration of the Independence of the United States. After that was the time of the grand rodeos, some of which linger to this day. For years and years the Fourth of July Rodeo at Warrick, on the south side of the Bear Paw Mountains was the place to be. I have talked to many old time cowboys who went on to do great...

Saturday evening, June 28, estimated "75 to 100 mph winds" wreaked havoc with an eastbound freight train near the Bowdoin area, between Malta and Saco. Even though the train was stopped as a safety precaution, the winds overturned a number of railroad cars carrying intermodal cargo containers. About 160 of the cargo units were thrown near the tracks during the storm. After work by an outside derailment service and BNSF employees, traffic was restored around 2 pm on the Sunday after the...

For Immediate Release – June 24, 2016 Long days of abundant sunshine and limited rainfall mean that grasses, shrubs and even trees are beginning to dry out in the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains. Whether outside for work or play, individuals need to be careful so their actions don't accidentally spark a wildfire. Something as simple as driving over or parking a vehicle with a hot muffler in high, dry grass can start a fire. So can the use of gasoline powered equipment without a proper s...

The annual Blaine County Cruise is set for June 24 and 25. Alan Pula, one of the planners for this year's cruise, said, "We didn't really come up with a theme for the cruise this year. The annual cruise is one of the main activities of the local auto club. This is the sixth year the Chinook-based club has...

Montana is justifiably known for the quality, abundance and diversity of its fisheries. Unfortunately, a small and arrogant group of people feel they are entitled to the fish they want, where they want and many of Montana’s best fisheries are now damaged or threatened by illegal fish introductions. Fish introductions are not inherently bad, many of Montana’s most famous fisheries are based on introduced species. Many of Montana’s native species are being re-introduced back into historic habitat once limiting factors are removed. However, even t...
