The Harlem boys basketball season is off to a highly-successful start.
After their season-opening wins over Huntley, 99-82 and Lame Deer 84-58 two weeks ago, the Wildcats began last weekend with a win over Poplar 78-50 last Friday night. The victory was a big rivalry win for the Wildcats, who got a crazy 43 points from Cody McCabe in the win. Lathan Black Wolf added 24 points to the win.
The Wildcats are now off for Christmas Break and will return to action on Jan. 2 when they travel to Malta for a District 2B battle, then they turn around and visit Glasgow on Jan. 3.
The Harlem girls started of the season with a 1-1 record on the season-opening weekend in Billings. The Wildcats then opened District 2B play with a game against Poplar last Friday night at home. And in a close game, the Harlem girls fell to Poplar 55-53. The game was close throughout, but in the end, the Indians edged ahead, and Harlem missed a game-tying shot in the final seconds.
Next up for the Harlem girls is a game against Malta on Jan. 2 and a trip to Glasgow Jan. 3.
Meanwhile, the Turner Tornadoes basketball teams wrapped up the December portion of their schedule last weekend. The Turner girls beat Dodson last Friday night, with a dominant 48-31 win. Ali Doyle scored 14 points and Natalie Richman added 13 in the win. Bridget Reed also scored 11 points as the Turner girls improved to 3-0 on the young season.
Also on Friday night, the Turner boys fell short against Dodson, 58-48, as the boys fell to 2-1 on the season.
The Turner boys and girls will be back in action when they travel to Hays-Lodge Pole on Jan. 2 before returning home to host North County on Jan. 3.
The HLP boys meanwhile, opened their seasons at the Native American Classic in Great Falls two weeks ago. HLP lost to the Browning JV and Two Eagle River in Great Falls, but rebounded with a 60-59 win over Augusta and a 53-43 win at Sunburst. HLP then beat Frazer before falling to the Box Elder Bears last week.
The HLP girls also beat Class B Wolf Point and the Browning JV at the NAC in Great Falls two weeks ago. Then, after beating Augusta 61-41 and Sunburst 64-34, the T-Birds finished the first part of the season by sweeping Frazer and Box Elder last week. HLP beat the Lady Bears 39-33 to improve to 5-0 on the season.
