If you are a Presbyterian the minister’s house is a manse. If you are an Episcopalian, the residence is the Rectory. If you are a Methodist like me, your minister’s house is called the Parsonage. It was in discussing our parsonage that I found that most of my church is not marching to the same drummer as I am. First, with an elderly and shrinking congregation, the large question that looms on my mind is whether we can afford to provide a residence for our minister. Would we be better off to provide him or her more money and let him or her fin...

This weekend is Memorial Day. What memories that brings back. First, my family would all visit the graveyard and I noticed that the amount of graves we decorated on what used to be called Decoration Day gets larger each year. What started out as putting flowers on Grandpa Lucke’s grave and mother’s little brother Bobby has now grown into around ten graves to decorate with something or other. It used to be a simple matter. I used to put geraniums on the graves, then go and get them after Memorial Day and plant them in a planter right next to...

However to win three state titles in the same sport for three straight years is exactly what the Chinook Sugarbeeter tennis team has done. The 'Beeters took to the court this past weekend in Missoula for the Class B/C State Tennis Tournament and won the title for a third straight year. The Chinook tennis team competed in Havre this past weekend at the Northeast B/C Divisional tennis tournament. The Sugarbeeters finished the weekend at the top of the leader board in both Singles and Doubles competition. Brooke Nicholson kept up her winning ways as she took the singles championship. "Brook is a coach's dream player. I don't have to worry about her at meets. If she makes a mistake, she has recognized it and corrected it before I can form the words to tell her. She always has...

Mother’s Day has just passed us by. I remember Mother’s Day of my childhood very well. When we went to church on Mother’s Day, and we did go to church, most of the congregation wore carnations on them somewhere. Red if your mother was living and white if your mother was dead. That tradition died out, like so many more, for some reason unknown to me. I was blessed with having two mothers and two grandmothers and for a time even a great grandmother, Augusta Behrends. Although great grandmother Behrends did much to make me frightened to this...

  • What 'Cher Point

    Robert Lucke|May 11, 2016

Almost as I am writing these words on a May Saturday afternoon, the Kentucky Derby is being run. It has attracted the rich, the poor, Royalty and most everyone else through the years. It is the reason I started writing this sports column. Many of you remember the writings of Doris Johnson (aka FlazT) did in “The Journal” Well, FlazT loved horses and she loved writing about them. Once in a column I wrote I referred to a horse as a nag. That really offended FlazT and she wrote a column in retaliation. As I got to know FlazT better, I found out...

I had a mess of shrimp in my freezer that needed to be cooked. So, I got out my recipe for Alfredo Sauce with Shrimp. I must say that this recipe that I found several years ago on the internet is so very simple and probably one of the best Alfredo sauces you will ever eat. First you need about two pound of U 15 shrimp. That will give you 30 shrimp to peel, devein and butterfly. To butterfly, simply make the line where you deveined the shrimp a tad deeper and split the body up about 2 inches from the end. That makes the shrimp appear larger and...

  • Nurse Week

    Kodi Brown|May 4, 2016

Nurses Week begins this year on May 8th and ends on May 14th. May 8th was designated as National Student Nurse Day, which is celebrated annually now. National School Nurse day is the Wednesday that falls during Nurse Week. In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to the president, Eisenhower, to proclaim “Nurse Day” in October of the following year. The proclamation however was never made. A bill for a National Nurse week was introduced to Congress in 1955 but nothing became of it. The...

This is going to sound like a whine column but I can see why people no longer answer their telephones. It used to be that when the phone rang you answered it. Now days I call someone and I get an answering machine 90 percent of the time. I asked a good friend why he didn’t answer the phone and he said there were too many crazy people calling him. I answer my phone and he is right. I think I get a scam call at least once EVERY day! Of late it has been a man with a far Eastern accent who tells me that there is something wrong with my Windows o...

  • 'Beeter Netters step up and take down Havre; play well in Fort Benton

    Rob Everingham|Apr 27, 2016

The Chinook Sugarbeeter tennis team had another successful outing as they competed in Havre last Tuesday against the Blue Ponies. Chinook went 27-1 on the day. "Havre has a couple of hard hitting singles players in Paige Nelson and Meggan Smith. Both Brooke and Meggan got to play each of them and were very successful," said 'Beeters head coach Tom MacLean. McLean also said that Havre has several good doubles teams and he said it was nice test for his doubles players and they responded...

I grew up in a wonderful town at a wonderful time. Born in 1941, Havre was my stomping ground in the late 1940.s and early 1950’s. Things did not start to change until the 1960’s. Havre was a town unto itself. Its business district was glorious. There was our store, the Lou Lucke Company, a store that little boys dream about. There was Clacks Hardware, the F. A. Buttrey Department Store, many small stores, many restaurants, three Oriental restaurants, bars for all occasions, three downtown hotels, a flower shop, three jewelry stores and whe...

A couple of weeks ago Keith Hanson, Duke Pursley and I were having a conversation in “The Mountaineer” office in Big Sandy about fish. Duke had said that he hoped it warmed up soon because he wanted to catch some of the fish in his privately stocked pond. I asked him if the fish were rainbow. He scoffed at the idea and said it was only brookies for him. He loves them about ten inches long and all the bones come out when the back bone is removed. That led me to dream about our Clear Creek cabins of my youth. My Grandpa Lucke used a cabin cal...

Like much of the time I do not know the outcome of the Masters tournament at Augusta, Georgia. I love the Masters for several reasons. First, it is held when spring is in full bloom in Georgia. The course is beautiful with camellias and azaleas blooming all over and birds singing their hearts out in the trees about the course. The lawns are green with the first blush of spring and commentators like Jim Nance make it even better with their lavish descriptions of the settings and golfers. President Eisenhower had a summer home right next to the...

It is recipe time once again. Here are three ways to make steamed cabbage. All three turn the cabbage into a very different food than the others. One or more just may be hits around your house. First, my mother’s recipe. It is very simple. She was a simple but good cook. This recipe makes for a very traditional and might I say pure steamed cabbage. Core out a medium cabbage and cut it into very fine shreds. Take a medium onion and dice it using a medium to large dice. Put a quarter of a cup of butter or margarine in a heavy frying pan. S...
