(1 Corinthians 16:14). There are some verses that speak to every age and every circumstance. “Let all that you do be done in love” is one of those. From children in the classrooms of VBS to adults in the halls of power, this verse offers wisdom and guidance. I’m glad that this is the theme verse for our Vacation Bible School—more affectionately known as VBS—this year. In a beautiful example of Christian unity here in Havre, five churches—plus a pair of counselors from Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp—come together to put on VBS for the entire co...

You know, Lord, the other day, friend Barb, shared that their pastor had a great sermon on, or about Eyes! He preached, quoting 1Peter 3:4 "Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfolding beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." He suggested that we should make a point to truly look into the eyes of people we encounter this week. Be bold and mention something beautiful you see within each person." Barb said she'd gone shopping and entering the che...
Out our way, ranches are often pretty good size, especially in cattle country. In my first parish in Wyoming, I got a chance to get to know folks at the Empire ranch. Their ranch was on both sides of the Wyoming/ Nebraska border/ In fact the state line of Wyobraska ,as the area was called, ran right through their ranch house. Though the ranch and house were on both sides of the state line, he had Wyoming license plates on his truck, and I asked how his residence status had been made. He explained that both states had agreed that when the line...

You know, Lord, we’ all have interesting ideas about Happy Homes... just sharing a few ideas: Ms. ‘R.D’. mentioned LONG AGO, her mother was very careful about smelly refrigerators. She remembered mommy removing ALL the food, wiping down ALL surfaces with disinfection spray cleaner. Sometimes she did that, but she did NOT do mother’s step #2 which was to spread a dozen smashed charcoal briquettes on two trays, placing one in the fridge and one in the freezer. Her hubby did NOT LIKE THAT. Ms. R. S. liked ‘Holiday Gravy Mishaps’ when she was a k...
If I were a car, I’d choose to be a 1945 Pontiac sedan, green. Why a Pontiac. Because the first family car I remember was a Pontiac, an older model than a ’45, pretty sure. I don’t remember my Dad ever buying a new car, but when he worked for Ford Motor in Louisville, he might have. Memory is a funny, fluid thing. Somewhere in a box I have a photo of me as a little girl standing in front of our Pontiac, gray, holding my Dad’s hand. Since I’m not a car and this is my imagination, I can choose the year of my birth and the model and color I w...

Out our way folks some times say,” I may not have busted many broncos, but some sure busted me!” Today is one of those days. Copper and I were on our walk and coming into the back yard, I lost my balance and fell. No big deal except the legs and knees refused to cooperate, I had to crawl to the fence and pull myself up. Getting old ain’t for the young — or those who think that the youth inside and the old coot on the outside are the same. Nope! Nu-uh! Can’t be done! Today is Memorial Day — and a friend reminded me of his flight home after...

If I were to find myself in front of the Great Judgement Seat, in which I don’t believe, I’m pretty sure the first question (Picture black robe, powdered wig, furrowed brow, huge eyebrows, glaring eyes.) she would ask, would be, “What did you do to enjoy yourself today?” I have an answer. “I rode my tricycle. Wah-hoo!” My morning starts early with a chorus of birdsong, which pretty much goes on all day, with the accompaniment of roosters, peacocks and a donkey, except for that strange moment of silence as the sun peeks over the horizon. On...
I'm going to assume that if you are reading this newspaper, you are not part of Generation Z or Generation Alpha. At least, the Gen Zers (people born between 1997 and 2012 who are 14-29 years-old) and Gen Alphas (people born between 2010 and 2025 who are 0-16 years-old) I know don’t typically read an entire newspaper article. (You might notice that the dates given don’t line up; it’s hard for sociologists to pinpoint exactly when one generation ends and the next begins!) So I feel a little free to tell a story about some Gen Alphas I know....
You know, Lord, mending day just got finished over here and then a note popped up which seemed to be A-Okay to share, so here goes. Friend “Jan” had shared that when mending day happens, there are socks, shirts, jeans, oh -YOU NAME IT and it probably needs mending. Besides clothing, there is upholstery, fences, relationships and even broken hearts to mend. Mending clothing is not too complicated, but on mending day I’m ever so thankful and grateful, for my three little girls to help, even though they’re nearly grown up by now. “Mendin...
