John 14:1-6, 27 Have you ever thought about what you really want out of life? To some that may sound like a strange question, because of course everyone knows what they want from life. The good old American Dream, a house, a nice family, a car, and enough money to live a comfortable life. But is that what you really want out of life? John 14:1-6,27 gives an answer to that question about what do I really want out of life. Jesus says: “And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how c...

When people think of the Extension Office, they often think of 4-H. Overseeing the 4-H program is a large part of what we do in Extension. When people hear “4-H,” they often think of livestock projects and the county fair, and while those are important parts of the program, 4-H is much more than that. At its core, 4-H is a youth development program focused on helping young people build life skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. 4-H is the youth development program of Montana State University Extension, reaching youth ages 5–18 through h...

Nearly one hundred people gathered at the Chinook Senior Center on Friday, March 27 to join the group of seniors celebrating their birthdays that month. According to Director Ginger Hansen, counting the meals delivered, the Center prepared for over one hundred diners that day, given the popularity of the menu. In the south-east corner, a pastel archway shaped by muted pink and sage green balloons and a gossamer-looking backdrop provided a stage for Elaine Campbell, Roger Fischer, and Brad...

With the warmer temperatures and increased daylight hours, many of us are eager to get back outside and start working in our yards. Spring is a critical time to set the foundation for a healthy lawn, productive garden, and thriving trees throughout the growing season. A few early-season practices, guided by research-based recommendations from Montana State University Extension MontGuides, can make all the difference. When it comes to lawns, patience is key. Avoid the urge to fertilize too early. According to MSU Extension’s Maintaining S...

With ten individuals enrolled, the Adult Education ceramics class in Chinook has been underway since March 10. Under the direction of Chinook High School Art Teacher Shay Waldbillig, the course will run for five weeks, with the final session planned for April 7. Because this is Waldbillig's first class, she planned for eight total sessions over the five-week period but will likely make adjustments due to time constraints. The group meets in the high school art room from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. About t...
Hello From the Chinook Senior Center Earlier today, Jack Mattingly and Brandon Nissen came in to explain a bit about the recently formed Sugarbeeter Foundation, which includes several others as well as Jack & Brandon. Jack shared that our high school gymnasium floor is in need of replacing. It is original to 1964 and has been resurfaced so many times, that is no longer an option. It appears that the cost to replace it is a staggering nearly $350,000.00. The purpose of the Foundation is to help to further the many necessary things that are...

Hello From the Chinook Senior Center Keep in mind that when you are reading these articles, they are sent for print eight days before they are printed. Our Memorial service to honor Myrla McCoy brought us a very full house! What a testament to all that she has pioneered or done in our small community. Thank you to all for coming and sharing their fun little “Myrla stories”. Jack Mattingly did a wonderful job of sending Myrla on a Christian way and also sharing his experiences with her over the years. Of course, Sheri Miller played most bea...
Hello From the Chinook Senior Center We had a bit of fun on Friday, February 13th playing some special Valentine games. We needed to do it on that date, to accommodate the Veterans brunch the following day. We had a wonderful turnout for the “We Love Our Veterans” brunch, which was held this past Saturday. What a great idea the Milk River Church Association had by putting this together. We are honored to be a part of showing these fine people that what they did and what they gave matters to us and to our nation. Many people came and enj...
Hello From the Chinook Senior Center Firstly, let me say that we lost a lady who worked tirelessly at our Center for many, many years, with the passing of Myrla McCoy. Myrla continued until this past year taking care of all of the flowers outside around our Center for over 20 years. She also did the laundry for our Center for countless years. We will certainly miss her. We will host her Memorial here on Wed., February 18th @ 2:00. Burial will be at a later date. Hello From the Chinook Senior Center Here we are in the shortest month of the year. February is famous for Groundhog Day (based upon a German superstition) and Valentine’s Day, but it also holds unique astronomical quirks, including its role in correcting the calendar with leap years every four years to align with Earth’s 365.24-day orbit. It is a prime month for viewing the “Winter Hexagon” and “galaxy season”, (Leo and Virgo) as constellations. February’s birthstone is amethyst and it hosts celebrations like Black History Month. It is...
Hello From the Chinook Senior Center January is flying by! Normally, it seems to take about 90 days to pass, as it is generally dark, grey, stark and cold, HOWEVER, we have been seeing some amazing sunsets and sunrises that are unparalleled to many over the previous months. Look at the beauty that is provided at absolutely no cost! Don’t forget to take a really long look at the frost that lies on the grass, trees and fences as well. Yes, we are blessed to live in Montana. We are far removed from much of the chaos that seems to be plaguing large...
