On April 7, the Havre Elks Lodge #1201 announced the winners of their 2026 Most Valuable Students (MVS) Scholarships. Two of the recipients are from Blaine County: Carter Rayburn of Chinook and Bridget Reed of Turner. To win the scholarship, Reed and Rayburn were judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Leslie Gail Morin, 76, passed away March 31, 2026, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow following a lengthy illness. Leslie was born Sept. 4, 1949 in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of George and Isabelle (Travis) Pavlik. She was raise with her brothers and sister on the Northside of Pittsburgh. This week, April 14-17 is the annual Montana Library Association conference, and we will have reduced hours and no after school programs, so staff can attend conference for valuable training. Monday April 13th we will open be regular hours and have regular programs. Tuesday April 15th the library will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will have Story Time, but no Kidz Zone. The first big track meet of the high school season was held last Saturday in Havre as North Star hosted the annual Cal Wearley Invitational. And with more then 20 teams from all over Montana in attendance, the Chinook boys had a strong showing with 57 points to finish third overall. Fairfield was first and Havre was second. The Chinook Lions Swim Team hosted its 20th annual "Spring into Basketball" 3-on-3 tournament this past Sunday, welcoming 35 teams of third through sixth grade players. The Chinook girls 3/4-grade team earned a first place finish in their bracket. The event, organized entirely by swim team members and parents, featured everything from concessions to refereeing and scorekeeping handled in-house. With the weather not exactly cooperating early in the spring, the Chinook golf teams were more then happy to see the sunshine at the Sunnyside Country Club last week in Glasgow. Chinook competed in the Scottie Invitational where the Sugarbeeters finished third in the boys meet and fourth in the girls tournament. On the boys side, Ryan Bell was the top finisher for Chinook with a 83, while Carter Rayburn was 11th with a 95. Every time I've taken the bus on the toll road to the coast, when we pass by the outskirts of the mountain town of Ixtlan del Rio, I've noticed the sign that points toward "Ruina". The weather cooperated and it turned out to be a busy last week for the Havre High softball team. Things started a little rocky for the Blue Ponies last Tuesday as they lost their home opener to Lewistown 26-9 at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field. Ron was born February 16, 1941 and passed away, at his home in Lynnwood, WA, April 2, 2026 of natural causes with his family and his faithful dog nurse Daisy at his side. Ron spent 6 years in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and traveling all over the world, he loved the Navy. He came back to Havre in 1963 and met his future wife, Dorene Holden.
