Despite the colder temperatures and weekend snowfall, the First Annual Chinook Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Coyote Hunt held December 6-8 saw 21 teams registered and out hunting. The Harlem Junior/Senior High School along with the Harlem Elementary School were placed in lock-down the afternoon of Monday. December 9, following an undisclosed threat. Students at both locations were kept at the school until being released in the early evening. School activities were shut down as well as extra curricular activities. The Chinook Chapter of the FFA attended Winter Districts on Tuesday, December 10 in Winifred and brought home two awards. The Friends of the Harlem Library held their annual Wine & Cheese Fundraiser last Wednesday with proceeds going to projects being conducted throughout the year at the Harlem Library. Samples from 25 deer harvested around the state tested positive for chronic wasting disease last week. The majority of the new positive samples were from animals harvested within CWD Management Zones, where the disease is known to exist. Two of the positive samples were from areas where the disease had not been previously detected. These include a mule deer doe harvested in hunting district 650 south of the Fort Peck Reservation, and a white-tailed buck harvested in HD 702 in Rosebud County. The final results are in from the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Havre check station for the 2019 hunting season. The check station was open for eight weekends; from Oct. 12 (the open of general antelope) through Dec. 1 (the end of the deer/elk general season). The Blaine County Fair will no longer compete with nor complement the Fourth of July celebrations of Blaine County citizens in 2020.
