Reporter's note: Kody Farmer, with the "Blaine County Journal," was showing me some photos he'd taken recently at the Sweet Nursing Home. The photos were of the Christmas decorations that staff had put up throughout the facility. One group of photos showed wall decorations, like holiday wreaths, with photos of residents in their younger years. The photos ranged from wedding pictures to scenes with farm equipment and opening presents on Christmas with the children. The photos were like a...

The 'snowy season' seems to have set in and that means winter is official by the calendar and real outside. I grew up in the Midwest and experienced winter, but it wasn't until my own family lived in the western part of the country that I began to really understand winter-bitter cold, lots of snow, and howling winds. We first lived in Wyoming, bounced back east and south for a few years, then to North Dakota, western Washington and parts of both western and eastern Montana. I'd say we've had a...

There was a lot going on in Blaine County over the past twelve months and as we get ready to turn the calendar to January, 2017 we at the Blaine County Journal~News Opinion would like to take the time to look back on some of those events. We did not attempt to compile a 'Top 10' list as those seem to be arbitrary at best, but did want to include as many highlights from the past year as we could in our review. In looking through a years worth of front pages we came up with this selection of...

Reporter's note: Each year the Presbyterian Church in Chinook decorates a Christmas tree with white and gold handmade ornaments. The ornaments are known as Chrismons. I'd seen these ornaments on trees in other parts of the country, mostly in churches, but didn't know the history and origins of the unique three-dimensional decorations. Readers familiar with Chrismons will recall they are always white and gold (with a couple of rare exceptions). Chrismon is a combination of 'Christ' and...

Hunter numbers (1,810) were up 17% from 2015, and were the highest seen since 2010. Some of this was likely due to doe tags...

It was the fourth year for the congregations and community to come together for the pre-Christmas gathering. The idea for the joint community service was first suggested by Father Felix Nayak, who was pastor at St. Gabriel's at the time the event was started. Pastor Dennis Findorf of the Chinook Alliance Church,...

Currently underway in Harlem is a two year, five-million-dollar project to upgrade the waste water treatment plant and transition from a river discharge system to a pivot irrigation system. This process began in 2009, but with two legislation sessions with no resulting funding the project was not able to be completed then. In 2013, the City applied once again, receiving a TSEP grant for $625,000 and after applying to USDA Rural Development they received the remaining funds for the project....
