For the second consecutive year, Havre’s long-time Fourth of July Community Picnic and Music Festival will likely be absent from the city’s Independence Day celebrations. Since 2001, locals gathered for a free barbecue at Pepin Park, enjoying live music as part of their Fourth of July festivities. But in recent years, lead organizers and volunteers taking on the event have been tough to come by. The event originated over 20 years ago when the Woodwick brothers, Woody and Vince, along with a sma...

Whether you’re grilling burgers, steaks, hot dogs, or chicken, food safety should be just as important as the menu. On his first day of high school, Richard was lucky to meet the love of his life, Margaret. A three-sport letterman,... Full story
I’m not into numerology, but Biblically speaking, the number 40 holds particular significance in the scriptures. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights during the flood of Noah’s time. God’s people spent 40 years in the wilderness before the next generation could cross the Jordan and finally enter into the land God had promised to them. Moses spent 40 days on the top of Mount Sinai receiving God’s ten commandments. Jesus spent 40 days battling the temptations of Satan and preparing Himself for public ministry, and then upon His resurre...
Out our way, although rare, we still have mountain lion attacks. You may recall one Fall when a jogger and later a hunter were attacked and mauled while in the Bear Paws. Now I have never run into any up on “The Tiger Ridge” where we keep the cow/calf units , but also 6 bulls. However, the lions are still out there watching and waiting to sneak attack the unwary. I have had two run ins with “Lucifer Lion” - but no problem because I ride with “The Trinity”.I have shared the last incident with readers, but it is a good story ,so here it goes agai...

Long before the first tip-off of the winter season, the work that shapes a basketball team is already underway, often in quiet gyms, on summer weekends, in games that don't count in any standings. That was the scene in Chester and Joplin on June 26 and 27, where more than two dozen boys and girls teams gathered for a two-day summer tournament hosted by CJI's basketball program. To a casual fan it might have looked like ordinary basketball, but summer ball runs by different rules and serves a...

You can take the girl out of the farm but you can’t take the farmer out of the girl. Okay, so I don’t really have a farm, but I have a lovely mango tree in my back yard, and therein, my farm crisis. I’m standing at my window looking into my back yard at my mango tree, so loaded with fruit that we had to make stilts to keep the branches from breaking and to hold the fruit off the ground. Today the reason I’m standing in my house looking out is that the rain, has not let up, cycling, ‘round and ‘round, through drizzle, mizzle and pizzle to l...
